I have been receiving quite a few calls lately about this whole “conficker thingy”. It seems that there has been a lot of press on what this worm can/might do, but not much about how to determine if your machine is infected or how to remove it. I found a nice site that will quickly show you if you are infected.

If you find that your machine is infected, Microsoft has updated their Malicious Software Removal Tool to clean up your system. Just download, install and run the program from the MS site. Alternatively, you can run Windows Update and it will install the program you need. Be sure to install the “Optional Software Updates”.

Most, if not all, anti virus software packages now have updates to detect and remove conficker but part of the problem is it causes your system to not update your anti virus software. If you are infected and can’t navigate to any of the removal tools on the web then you should use a non infected machine to download the needed files to a usb drive and then transfer the files to the infected machine using the drive.

As far as I understand, conficker only infects machines that have an outdated system file. Microsoft released an update for this file a few months ago, but if you have not updated then you are at risk. .

Please everyone, update your software regularly. Not just your anti virus client, but also Windows update.
